Haiku Tuesday

yesterday: plant seeds,

today: sun, water and growth

tomorrow: life. food.

This Haiku is brought to you by the season, my want to give back, life as we know it (a cycle) and my recent visit to see the Cherry Blossoms in Washington, DC.  This Haiku can be applied literally, as I’ve seen many people tending to their garden this past weekend. The idea of cyclic growth can also be applied to learning and raising children. “What goes around comes around,” and “what you put in is what you get out.” Plant healthy seeds, nurture the seeds and life will bloom. Sometimes I really marvel at it all.

Anyways, here is a sneak peak of more to come later in the week from the Cherry Blossom photo walk:

Macro Monday:: Week 13

These macro shots are starting to really grow on me. I’m 13 weeks in or a quarter of the way through this adventure and I’m having such a blast searching around for material. The next couple months I’m sure will be filled with flowers. I’m loving the spring weather! We got up to 88 in Northern Virginia today. Anyways, I’ll stop rambling and bring you this weeks image:

I wasn’t sure I had this shot nailed, with the wind and people, and honestly wish it was a bit more sharp. Overall though, I love the pinks and soft feel of the whole image. This was taken yesterday while in DC visiting the Cherry Blossoms. I had so much fun and will be sharing some of my shots with you later in the week.

*Admin Note: Yesterday I posted on Facebook and wanted to mention this change here for everyone who follows this blog and has an interest in my photo walks. Please like my nicoleinbold facebook page for further updates and events. I am going through a reorganization, which means I will not be posting these things on my personal Facebook page starting this week. Oh and don’t be alarmed that my web page isn’t working, I’m in the process of switching hosting companies, things will be back up shortly! Thank you for you patience and support!

walkinbold: crochet coral reef

Last weekend I took the opportunity to go downtown and visit the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef. It was so overwhelming. To think over 300 people contributed to the making of this exhibit to showcase art and science in one place was amazing. With that said, I wanted to share some of my shots. I tend to experiment when I take these adventure trips, so they aren’t always perfect. I hope you enjoy!

I would also like to take this time to plug what I am calling “walkinbold.” I wanted to create an informal group for local photographers to just get out and shoot. Sometimes we get stuck, shutter block, or just feel lost. These events are designed for you to take pictures, ask questions, share your images and critique for the next event. These outings don’t cost money, as in I don’t charge anything, however there are a couple venues that do charge an admission fee. Please see my events page or like my facebook page to be alerted when events are happening. There is no pressure to go on all of them! I’ve complied a list of places with dates that I have chosen, want to see and share with you. I encourage people to make further suggestions, let me know about your favorite place to take pictures, or somewhere you have always been dying to go and lets make an event of it! Photography is a never ending learning career and hobby. We are always honing our skills. Feel free to ask questions and always bring your manual! I hope to see some you out and about!

my favorite thing…

…and wander the places I go frequently. Happy April everyone! (The above is a print by the lovely 3LambsGraphics)

This weekend I plan to visit the DC Mall. I am so excited to see the Cherry Blossoms this year, one of my favorite events! I hope to see some of you down there soaking in some sun and the scenery. Here are a few shots from years past.

Do you have a special place that you like to revisit and wander?

Haiku Tuesday

living to the beat

of our own drum-Our true love

rain clouds and rainbows.

No two relationships are alike. As individuals we weave in, out and around life. What a joy it can be to find someone to weave with. Don’t let others tell you what is right and wrong. Safe guard your relationships with communication and anything is possible. You do what you want to do, respectively and with balance. March to the beat of your own drum, live beautiful music mixing wonderful colors on your way! This week I’m seeing some pink and green and listening to some Mumford and Suns and Bruno Mars! What is inspiring you this week?

Macro Monday:: Week 12

Another Monday down, the house has been fumigated for ants and outfits have been chosen for my husband and my photo shoot this weekend. So excited, bring on Tuesday!

I found my inspiration for this weeks macro at my parent’s house. To be honest their house isn’t too interesting, but I found a plate with some neat textures. I hope you enjoy!

Macro Monday::Week11

Some facts to start off the week. It is officially Spring, bring on the allergies and wonderful color of budding life. Mutual respect will get you far and lastly, I’m positively in love with the color yellow and the amazing spring time bush, Forsythia.

I ordered some calling cards from @overheardatmoo, and they came in today, two days before I was expecting them. I’m so excited to share them, it will be hard to part with them! I’m so glad I didn’t put a different image on each card, as I would definately not be able to part with them. Photography and Design done by yours truly. Here is a peak…

incomprehensible.

Many things have happened in my short years of life, to me, around me, involving me, and about me. When catastrophic events happen, I start counting even the most simple blessings. The sheer magnitude of damage, people lost, loved ones missing, homes demolished, life underwater, drowning in chemicals and fires, and not knowing where you might get your next meal.

Did you donate to help Japan? I’m feeling a little better after purchasing the above poster, but I wish I could do more. While I go about my daily life and complete seemingly mundane tasks, I realize there are many many people struggling, for everything. The pictures and videos are heartbreaking and rather incomprehensible. Something one would think they would only see in a bad movie. I am in awe, in the wake of such tragedy, to learn about how the people of Japan have taken everything in stride, with grace. “Not a single case of looting has been reported, and I haven’t seen any scene of people shouting in anger or banging on the table.” (Restoring Japan’s confidence and it’s people’s big dreams, Ayako Doi-CNN)

I wanted to take this time to share with you some artists that are giving back, and hope you too can share what you can.

Haiku Tuesday

temperamental life-

balance and moderation

who, what, when, where, why?

I wrote this down last week. This speaks volumes to me personally and looking on a worldly scale. Life simply requires balance and moderation.  Equality. Peace. Communication.

Macro Monday::Week 10

Some whimsy and fun for a less than peaceful Monday worldwide. I’m drawn to the asymmetry and sense of chaos that mother nature throws us. Out of every tragedy we learn how strong we really are, as a people, nation and world.

Macro Monday::Week 9

I hope everyone’s weekend was fun and your Monday was pain free!

This past Saturday I had the wonderful opportunity to teach the photography station at a local Cub Scouts Belt-loop Bonanza. The day was filled with boys learning everything from good manners and chess to basketball and soccer. I educated two groups on the parts of the camera and the benefits of photography in modern culture. Afterwards, we went outside to practice. The teaching part was fun, the kids learned so fast and were awesome with the technology, as everyone had a digital camera of some sort. I was excited and nervous to teach this station, one, given the age group and two, the relative expense of the common digital camera. It was hard to corral and structure picture taking with 10 or so boys, outside and wanting to go in their own direction. I couldn’t blame them though I tend to wander, not wear my neck strap and climp obstacles with my expensive camera. It is an exciting thing, to capture stills of everyday life. I made it out alive though and no one dropped their camera, plus there was plenty of sharing pictures with eachother. Overall, I enjoyed watching the boys learn and then practice and help eachother out. It was neat to see what they wanted to take pictures of as well. Mostly eachother, but I had a few willing to lay on the ground trying to get a leaf at a new angle, to be different and unique. A great experience!

In honor of the Scouts and to poke a little fun at us professional and hobbyist I have come up with this satirical image. I hope you enjoy!

Haiku Tuesday

life, color: distraction-

permission smile allowance

inspired everyday

This is becoming a theme. Over the past year I have dealt with and found out some unpleasant things. I am learning what it is to be me, learning to be a person. Some outcomes are easy to see and easy to embrace, my love of art and small things, colorful things! Others are harder, slowing down my speech, really noticing myself and others and how I can effect all of the above. The process, life, is rewarding and oh so scary. I’m starting to enjoy it a little better though now, with self permission. Self allowance to be what I want o be, nurturing myself to change and be ok with that change. I’m just now starting to grasp the idea that life is a journey, happiness is a journey. A previously bizarre concept.

Macro Monday:: Week 8

I was slightly stumped this week. I think I need to get out more, I’m running out of interesting ideas, which is not good in week 8. My day job has inspired this post. I come across a lot of color, patterns and textures. I hope you enjoy!

I saved my favorite for last. The blues, purples, and yes even some yellow = LOVE!

These could have used a little more editing, but I think that takes away from the assignment a little. I’m always open to constructive criticism though!

Macro and Haiku Tuesday

With life being so busy lately, mostly with work and feeling under the weather, I had forgotten my new years resolution word, among other things. I’m not sure how I let it slip, this golden ticket of a word is this years saving grace in becoming the person I want to be and the woman my friends and family believe me to be already, despite everything. My word is permission.

Last night while struggling to fall asleep I was hit with this word. Permission; right now, today, and probably for a while it is a word full of nurture rather than just allowance. Therefore, I have come up with my haiku in honor of this amazing word. Warning, the haiku also came to me while I could not fall asleep, at one in the morning, so bare with me.

permission: a smile;

a small breathe, a new outlook

a commissioned friend.

These words are not quite there, but I wanted to share. I hope you enjoy!

For those of you who are wondering what happened to Macro Monday, my answer is, well I do not have a good answer other than I had a horrible Monday. Today was a little better and I was feeling extra creative so when I got home I ventured behind my camera to play around with more color. A new color at that, I was drawn to yellow again, really craving the warmth so I went with…Blue, here it is:

This item was fun to play around with, more textures than I had expected and so many more colors to work with…Love color!

I hope evryones week has started off well!

Great Falls and Amazing Crochet

Saturday was my first walkinbold photowalk at Great Falls National Park. It ended up being a small group, Anna, Nate and myself, oh and Luna. I have to say I was very excited to get out and shoot something new! The weather was awesome even despite the 40+ mph winds. Here are a few of my shots:

There will be another event at Great Falls National Park this spring, June 4th to be exact. I can’t wait to go back when the trees are green and more birds are flying around! All around this was a great adventure. The next walk will be at the National Aquarium in DC on Saturday, March 12. Besides viewing the events page you can see who is going or add yourself to events on my facebook page, also feel free to add yourself to the walkinbold flickr group to view and comment photowalk images. If you want more information please see my events page.

Speaking of new events, an exhibit I’m quite intrigued to share and see will be added to the events page for March 26. The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef, a mouthful to say and a wonderful sight to see. I have been reading about this exhibit since my lovely friend @riesl2 told me about it last night. This crafty display is a temporary exhibit that marries handmade crafts, science and math, color and the ocean in one exhibit! All things I adore, well maybe not the science and math, but they amaze me just the same. I really hope everyone can make it out.

Looks like it is time to get back into crocheting!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend,

True Words

I am in love with these vintage prints from evajuliet. These words have been my little families mantra over the past couple of years or so, when life has seemingly chosen us to bully. While we feel we are constantly cleaning up a mess or pulling ourselves out of a hole we try our best to stay positive. *Everything is gonna be alright* Take a deep breath* The best is yet to come* I hope to acquire these three prints soon, as well as this one. Love!

Haiku Tuesday

Warm sunshine and lace:

laughter, encouragement, glue

an artist is made

I’m finding Teusdays to be hard to post happy thoughts due to my schedule. I pushed hard for a happier tone this week, still revolving around being an artist though. I’m in love with vintage lace right now, and the weather has been oh so yummy! Can’t wait for the spring!

Something to look forward to: The first PhotoWalk event is this Friday at Great Falls National Park! I have recently put myself back on facebook as a page. I’m still getting things together to make it all pretty, but you can follow events through that venue if you would like. Otherwise, please see my events page. I hope to see everyone out and about at some point this year!

Macro Monday::Week6

As promised, a new color! This may be my favorite shade of pink!

I hope everyone had a peaceful Valentine’s day. (Thank you akginspiration for the wonderful muse for tonights post!)

We didn’t do anything fancy. Homemade Chipotle is currently being prepped for when the husband gets home from work. I know it’s late but it is our favorite! Simple and sweet, the way every day should be!

p.s. be sure to check out the reveal from last week!

Haiku Tuesday

Life: Do what you love

these days So sentimental

be what you love: Art

This haiku is inspired by my current life’s conundrums and a blog a ran across today. So inspired to be everything, create everything and just be.

@ThePanicRoom your blog, photography and movie series are amazing. Something to live up to, something to try in the future. I love your work!

p.s. I wish changing was easy! To be who you want to be rather than be molded into something you’re really not…I can’t be fit into a box!

Macro Monday::Week 5

I’m still in love with yellow- I bet you couldn’t tell! Next week, I will make it my mission to photograph something other than yellow. I hope you enjoy.

For those of you who guessed lasts weeks Macro Monday, yay for commentors! Here is an update to show what I had captured.

Things to look forward to: I have posted an events page in my navbar (at the top). Please feel free to join me on any of the photowalks or crafty events. I’m sure I will add a couple more throughout the year so keep watching! I hope to see everyone out and about taking pictures and exploring the world!

UPDATE: I took the pictures of this book because I loved the colors and wanted the challenge of that small bit of color on the edge of the pages. I had not thought ahead, for those who were wondering. Either way, this book from @photojojo should be a staple of the creative minded person. I have fallen in love, and am knee deep in potential projects!

Buy the Photojojo! The Book at the Photojojo Store!

I hope to share a couple projects with you once I get them things made. I’m smitten over the handmade community right now, especially when I can utilize my ever growing stack of pictures!  So much talent and inspiration! Not to mention, this feeds my goal to buy as locally as possible and do as much with my own hands as I can. I can’t wait for the warmer weather so I can learn about farmers markets and picking my own fruit! It’s a whole new world!!

My Business Cards Tutorial

As promised here is a quick tutorial of how I made my business cards. This being my first tutorial, I had a hard time remembering to slow down and take pictures, however I think I got the key steps covered. I hope you enjoy!

Materials:

Cardstock, or heavy scrapbooking paper

Glue, I used an all purpose tacky glue

Old paint brush (using to spread glue)

Metal ruler

Exacto knife, or paper cutter

Cutting Mat

Old plastic/vinyl placemat, though scrap paper would work

Round Corner or any edge punch (optional)

Various Stamps, to include business info stamp

Stamping Inks

Heavy books

Embossing Pad, Powder and Heat Gun (optional)

Step 1:

Choose your paper or papers. (I chose two colors of card stock, Curry yellow and Kraft.) Then cut 2 inch strips from each color.

*Thought: Paper-Source carries some precut business cards in various colors to include a few whites, and shimmer options! This tip is if you want to keep the cutting and gluing to a minimum.

Step 2:

Grab your paint brush, Kraft glue, place-mat and strips of paper. Lay down one side of each card and squeeze some glue out onto one strip at a time, spread the glue using your paint brush into a thin layer over the entire strip, to include edges and corners. Then lined up the top sheet strips, pressed it on and placed under a heavy book for flat drying.

While your waiting for your strips to dry (roughly 10 to 15 minutes, oh and now is a good time to clean the glue brush unless you just going to trash it). You may be asking, “why glue two pieces of card stock together?” Here is my answer:  I chose this route after creating some quickly with one sheet of the heavy scrap booking card stock. I found the cards were not substantial enough, for my liking. However, those of you who saw them really liked them, not to mention they were memorable, I think due to the embossing.  I also wanted to include two colors that I could not find in one sheet with the pattern or feel I was trying to go for. If you’re in a pinch or don’t mind a lighter card by all means skip this step if you would like and use a paper cutter, it will speed up your process for sure.

Step 3:

Grab your cutting mat, exacto knife, ruler and dried strips. We will cut the strips into 3.5 inch sections. This will produce the standard business card size and shape. From here feel free to round out the corners or maybe use one of those “punch around the page” (or here) tools on one side. You can find these at either Jo-Ann Fabrics or Michaels.

This detailing, will set you apart from other crafters or business owners while keeping your card the standard size, so it won’t get lost or thrown away. Not to mention it will add that memorable factor!

Step 4:

This is where the fun starts. I have kept my cards fairly simple and minimal, but you can do just about anything here to decorate your card. Stamp away and/or emboss using your brands colors and motifs. For your business information you can buy a “custom print kit” to stamp your information in the back.  * Note: You can find these customizable stamps many places, so shop around. I bought mine at Staples, since it is close to my house.

*Thought: If you are a fabric designer, quilter, stylist basically anyone that handles fabric it may be cool to use scrap fabric for the front of your card! The same gluing technique should work, or maybe spray adhesive. Play around. This idea has a lot of potential, and will provide another layer of texture! (Let me know if you try this one out, I would love to hear your results!!)

*Another Thought: If the idea of making 100 or more of your own handmade business cards, to include gluing, cutting and stamping has you shaking your head or wanting to give up before you start, please bare with me. First, I realize I may be a little crazy, but I love working with my hands and for now, while I’m just starting out, I’m having fun with this whole business card, branding thing. Second, don’t get overwhelmed, here is an awesome solution!

I am absolutely enamored with the lovely moo. You can print a different design on each card. It is super fun, budget friendly, and they have green/sustainable stock!! If you have a few ideas roaming around in your head and don’t know much about Photoshop or are timid to create every detail of your business cards, please check out what moo provides. You could make a few variations that you love, take some high resolution photos and upload your .jpeg file and create your card designs front and even back  to get printed. Even more simple and again if the idea of creating and taking pictures isn’t for you moo has some awesome ready made designs you can browse and choose from then customize the back with your information! They truly make everything simple and the quality is amazing!

Step 5:

After you have stamped them front and back you are pretty much done. They are ready to hand out. Keep in mind these are not laminated, so I would keep them in a case to keep them dry. I hope you have fun with this. While a little tedious, this is totally rewarding when you hand them out and people are amazed.

Also keep in mind you don’t need to make a ton in one sitting. When I have a free hour and nothing to do I make a sheet or two.

I hope you have fun with this or if nothing else the idea gets your creative juices flowing!
